Fed Up Girl was created by two girls who are “fed up” with society’s obsession with weight loss, diets, exercise, celebrity images, supermodels and more.   We believe it is up to the girls of our “new generation” to stand up and make a positive change.  The most important step in having a positive body image is to love your body just the way it is.  And here are five tips to do just that:

  1. Figure out what body type you are.  There are several common body types.  While yours may not be exactly one of the five possible, it is close to one.  So do some research on body types.  You can simply jump on the internet and do a quick search.  Answering a few questions and looking at some examples should help you determine which type you probably are.  Now, girls are growing, so many of you don’t know quite yet which type you will be!  Don’t worry just guesstimate the body you are closest to and you can change this identification as your body grows.  Knowing your body type is a big first step in loving your body because it helps you to  stop comparing yourself to others, which leads us to step two.
  2. Stop comparing your body to other people’s bodies.  This means everyone from your best friend to your mother to that ad you just saw in Teen Vogue.  Why stop comparing?  Everyone is different.  We know you have heard it before, but it is true!  The easiest way to understand this is when it comes to fashion.  Trends are cool and there are so many different fashions, but not everyone looks great in every fashion or trend.  Why?  Well there are a ton of factors but mainly it is your body type.  I am actually very petite with a short waist, so only I know I look silly in super long tops, even though they are totally in style.  They just aren’t for me.  So take a stand for yourself and figure out what looks good on your body and only wear that.  Do not wear the latest trend if it doesn’t look amazing on you.  Looking great and feeling great are highly correlated.
  3. Dress and groom yourself like a Princess.  I don’t mean like Cinderella, but figuratively speaking you should always dress to impress.  Impress yourself!  When you have neatly combed hair, ironed clothes and nice accessories you feel better and act better.  So in order to be the rock star you are, take the time to groom yourself nicely, wear nail polish (if you are allowed to) and dress yourself in clothes you like and enjoy.  You will love your body and show yourself you love your body by taking good care of it.
  4. But what about your actual weight or diet?  Clearly our society is very focused on diets and the perfect body.  Some adults you know may be dieting, some may have suggested you lose weight or said other things like that.  Does that mean you are fat?  Do you need to diet?  What if you gain weight then what happens?  Well, loving your body means taking good care of it.  You want to not only look nice (with nice grooming, flattering clothes, etc.) but you want to feel nice.  So next time an adult tells you what to eat, pay a little bit of attention- try to notice how your body feels.  Honestly a bunch of candy usually leads to a sugar high and then a crash, while a bowl of fruit might leave you clear headed and able to run around in the backyard for hours before it gets dark.  Don’t worry about what other people say about food, listen to how your body feels with what you feed it.  And just eat more of what feels better in the long run.
  5. Don’t get involved in any conversations in regards to body types, weight, diet, what people should or should not eat, what a celebrity’s body looks like, etc.  You absolutely have to take a stand and let people know that you do not participate in such conversations.  This is the best way you can love your body, protect it and help your fellow friends and family do the same.  Be the good example and show them how it feels to live life in a body you love.

Good luck girls.  I know you can do it!  We are counting on you to be fantastic Fed Up Girls to make a big huge change in our society!
